Wintering with Emily Grimes & Co
When first approached by Emily (@grimesatron) and partner Chris from NE Surf about a winter road trip to Scotland, we were a little confused as to why they weren't heading somewhere warmer. But that's what makes these two special — a January journey northward in search of winter waves.
The Dog House
NE Surf's primary transport vehicle, affectionately named "The Dog House," is the heart of their operation. Chris (@dyslexicchris) regularly drives it with surfboards secured to its exterior along the A1 corridor, chasing swell conditions. The vehicle has been outfitted with various Northcore van-life products for the expedition.
Cab Essentials
Northcore lanyards for keys — cheap, easily repairable, and visually appealing — paired with dashboard hula dolls for aesthetic appeal. The seat covers receive particular emphasis as top-tier, tough waterproof solutions suitable for most single car and van seats. Especially practical for surfers who prefer not changing out of wetsuits between sessions.
Board Transport
For carrying boards, the setup features D-Ring Tie Downs paired with Aircooled Surfboard Travel Bags. These neoprene-sleeved carriers protect both boards and vehicle exteriors from damage. The more robust Travel Bag option is recommended for serious expeditions, having proven durable through mud, snow, and beach car park environments.
Thanks to NE Surf for their community contributions throughout the North East and for field-testing Northcore gear under demanding Scottish winter conditions.
