Summer Water Safety: Stay Smart, Stay Safe
Summer's here. The sun's out, the water's calling, and we're all ready to dive in...literally. But before you head to the beach, lake, or river, it's worth taking a minute to think about safety. Almost half of all accidental drownings in the UK happen between May and August, and the risk increases fivefold when temperatures exceed 25°C.
Stop & Think
Before entering water, take a moment to assess your surroundings. Look for hazards like rocks, strong tides, currents, and sudden depth changes. Never jump from heights into water you haven't checked, and remember — cold water can shock even experienced swimmers. If you're visiting somewhere new, check local signage, look up tide schedules, and speak with lifeguards or local residents.
Stick Together
Whenever possible, choose lifeguarded locations. Stay close to others and make sure someone onshore knows where you are and can raise the alarm if needed. Teens and young adults aged 13 to 17 face an elevated risk, so extra care is important.
Emergency Response
If someone is in trouble, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard at coastal locations. Resist the urge to enter the water to rescue someone — instead, throw any available flotation device and summon professional help immediately.
If You Fall In: Float
Stay calm. Lean back and float on your back to regulate your breathing. Signal for help and wait for safe rescue conditions. If you see someone else in distress, keep your distance, give clear verbal guidance, and toss floating objects towards them.
Knowledge saves lives. Before heading out, check the Water Safety Code and RLSS UK resources. Stay smart, stay safe, and enjoy the water this summer.
